“这是茶壶吧?”“我看不像,应该是酒壶。”


今天下午,90岁的文物学家、考古学家、中国国家博物馆研究院名誉院长孙机先生在主讲2019年第一期国博讲堂——《试说鎣的功用》之前,特意到国博正在举办的“虎鎣:新时代 新命运”展览上转了转,听到了观众对虎鎣(yíng)功用莫衷一是的猜测。
“其实,它既不是装茶的,也不是装酒的。”孙机在随后的讲堂上解释道,“西汉以后人们才喝茶,而虎鎣是西周青铜器,它是用来装郁金汁的。郁金汁加入‘鬯(chàng)’中,便成为古代用来敬神的最名贵的酒——郁鬯。”
据孙机介绍,中国现存的鎣类西周青铜器仅有伯百父鎣、周晋鎣等不超8件,且大多有残缺,而经历了被掠夺、被拍卖、被捐赠的海外回归圆明园文物虎鎣,则是罕见精品,它于去年12月11日正式入藏中国国家博物馆。关于鎣的学术论文迄今未见一篇,老百姓对鎣更是非常陌生。那么,他此次推出的讲座,或可看作是对虎鎣功用的第一次学术解答。
爵不是用来喝酒的,也不是用来温酒的
“鎣”既有光明、美丽之意,又可指盛水器具。古时用以盛水的器具还有匜(yí)和盉(hé),此二者外形比较简洁,而虎鎣则造型精美独特:侈口,方唇,短束颈,宽折肩,收腹,圜底,三蹄形足。肩的一侧有管状流,以伏虎为造型,另一侧有龙首鋬,盖折沿,上有圆雕踞虎形装饰,盖与鋬上各有小环钮。虎鎣肩部饰夔纹,腹上部饰斜角云纹,腹下部饰瓦纹,足根饰饕餮纹。如此倾注匠心的虎鎣,装的水能和匜或盉装的水一样么!
虎鎣顶盖内铸有“自作供鎣”铭文,供即供奉,可见它是用于祭祀的礼器,可与另一件礼器爵配套使用。
细细的三足、苗条的身姿、长长的引流槽,对于爵的印象,很多人似乎并不陌生。但对它真正功效的认识又是模糊的。孙机指出,它是装酒的礼器,但它绝不是用来喝酒的,也不是用来温酒的。“长长的‘流’对着嘴,喝起来该有多么不方便啊。我国直至魏晋南北朝才有喝热酒的习惯,那以后才出现了温酒的器具,此前,老百姓都喝凉酒”。《楚辞·大招》有“清馨冻饮”之说,冻饮的美酒叫醴酒,类似今天老百姓自酿的米酒,酒精度低、气味清淡。
爵内装的不是通常的醴酒,而是鬯。《周礼·鬯人》郑玄注:“鬯,酿秬为酒,芬芳条畅于上下也。”《周礼·郊特牲》有文“至敬不饗味,而贵气臭(嗅)也。”孙机解释,“秬”是黑黍,用黑黍酿造的鬯比醴酒香多了。传说神是不吃不喝的,但喜欢闻香气。虔诚的人们就在爵内倒入鬯,放在火上烧热,端到神的面前,里面的鬯经过蒸腾而香气浓郁。

鬯加上郁金汁,成就最顶级的“郁鬯”


鬯并非古代最顶级的酒,最顶级的叫“郁鬯”。
《论语·八佾》疏引郑玄注:“郁,郁金草,酿秬为酒,煮郁金和之,其气芬芳条畅,故曰郁鬯。”可见,将一种叫郁金草的香草煮汁,便得郁金汁,郁金汁加到以秬酿造的鬯中,便得郁鬯。
古代将盛郁金汁的容器叫做“郁彝”,此说法可见青铜铭文“余兄为汝兹小郁彝”,彝是容器的泛称。孙机推测,与爵配套使用的虎鎣很可能是用来装郁金汁的。
在鬯中注入郁金汁,固然更增其香,但也是为了避免爵中的鬯经过蒸发变得过于浓稠而焦结。《说文》解释“歆”就是“神食气也”,古人认为,神闻了郁鬯熏蒸的香气就会感到歆享,进而满足敬奉者的要求。孙机说,祭天之后,爵里会剩一点底儿,人们便把剩下的倒在地上的白茅草上。他们期待美酒渗入渊泉,这样天上和地下的神鬼就会都高高兴兴的,带来上下交泰的好光景。
